Many football experts agree that there may never have been a more valuable Socceroo than Tim Cahill. His record is unmatched in the history of Australian football with a strike rate of almost one goal in every second game in international football. That kind of strike rate is considered the benchmark – even at club level – from separating the good players from the great ones!
Cahill’s name will forever be etched in Australian football folklore, as the first Australian to score at a World Cup, when he drove home the equaliser against Japan in the opening group match of Germany 2006.
After Japan led 1-0 for the majority of the game, Cahill scored Australia’s first ever World Cup goal to bring Australia level in the 84th minute. Moments later, Cahill curled in a second goal from outside the box in the 89th minute to put the Socceroos in the lead. With Cahill’s Pride & Passion beaming – It was evident it wasn’t enough for the Socceroos superstar to be the first Australian to score in a World Cup Finals game, and to be the first scorer of Australia’s second ever World Cup Finals goal, as he put his hand up once again and brilliantly assisted John Aloisi with the clincher moments later – This made Cahill Australia’s first Man of the Match at a World Cup finals appearance.
To celebrate the career of arguably Australia’s finest ever footballer to date, Football Federation Australia in conjunction with SEP is proud to release ‘Pride & Passion’.
